Vaillant"s defense mechanism categories: acoording to the degree to which they promote ineffective or effective behaviour. Immature defenses: distort reality the most; lead to the most ineffective behaviour. Intermediate defenses: less distortion of reality; lead to somewhat more effective coping: mature defenses: least distortion of reality; lead to the most adaptive behaviours. Projective assessment techniques: all based on the projective hypothesis unconscious themes that reveal the self will be project onto ambiguous stimuli. Dream analysis: unconscious conflicts can be expressed through the themes inherent in our dreams, manifest content: symbols or images in the dream. Latent content: deeper meaning or significance of the dream. Freud"s dream symbolism theory: certain objects represent male and female forms of sexuality. Involves presenting respondents with 10 inkblots: people list as many things as they can see in these ambiguous stimuli. Less susceptible to faking and dissimilation than structured personality measures: concerns about the inter-rater reliability, and the general validity of the test itself.
