PSYCO105 Lecture Notes - Lecture 3: Data Analysis, Observer-Expectancy Effect, Standard Deviation
Document Summary
Can"t base theories off of one experiment - you need to do it from a collective stand- point with many different experiments. Operational definitions - identifies one or more observable event that can be independently measured/tested ex. For losing weight the o. d. would be how much or by when. Laboratory - observe phenomena or behaviour in a laboratory setting. Naturalistic - observe phenomena or behaviour where it naturally occurs. Lab - have all the necessary tools. Natural - more likely to observe nature/spontaneous behaviour (non-influenced) Lab - unnatural environment so behaviour could be not quite typical. Case study - in depth examination of a particular person; not general, doesn"t pertain to everyone, usually special or unique cases. Survey"s - questionnaire/interview that summarizes the opinions/beliefs of a group; correlation research describes the relationship between two variables, never infers causation. Manipulate an independent variable to determine its effect on the dependent variable while controlling for extraneous variables.
