Genetic counselling: discipline that focuses on helping people deal with issues related to inherited disorders. A first trimester screen is the earliest screening a mother can get = blood test + ultrasound sonography in 11th - 13th week of pregnancy. Amniocentesis: examining a small sample of fetal cells drawn by a needle inserted into the amniotic fluid surrounding the unborn fetus. Chorionic villus sampling (cvs): a test that involves taking sample of hair like material that surround the embryo; used to find genetic defects. Embryoscopy: first 12 wks, a fibre optic endoscope is inserted through the cervix; can directly visualize the embryo, can diagnose malformations. Fetal blood sampling (fbs): after 18 wks, collecting blood from umbilical chord for testing; detect down"s syndrome, and other diseases. Sonoembryology: detects abnormalities in the 1st trimester; high frequency transvaginal probes and digital image processing. Sonogram: uses ultrasound to produce a visual image of the uterus, fetus, and placenta.
