Description
RELIGIOUS STUDIES 200 MARY DOUGLAS Follows Durkheim's binary of sacred/profane. DURKHEIM REMINDER: SACRED/PROFANE IS NOT LINKED STICTLY TO MORALITY, what is sacred is not necessarily what is good and vice versa. these things can flip back and forth. sacred tends to evoke goodness, but evil things can be sacred too. WHAT IS SACRED IS THE CONCERN OF THE COMMUNITY THE PROFANE IS THE CONCERN OF THE INDIVIDUAL TOTEM AS BEST EXAMPLE OF SACRED TOTEM - not the most primitive, not intellectually lesser, just most simple elementary form of religious mechanics. The reason deities tell folks what they want to hear is because the totemic principle is just the spirit of the community and the community's morality that keeps it together is the morality we get fed back from this source. totemi
