Witch hunts lecture (january 30 - february 17th) Within popular culture, the concept of determining a witch is represented as nonsensical. Some common themes would be the physical appearance of witches as. "old hags", and the accusers represented as educated, ignorant, fearful that emphasized the unusual logic used to determine witchcraft. Nonetheless, those who were accused of witchcraft were not really witches. The idea was that witchcraft was composed of two closely related phenomena: maleficia: harmful/black magic. Malefician practices often pertained to negative actions within the communities such as murder, storms, impotence, and even the still-growth of crops. These were at fault to the devil"s work, assumed to be practiced by "witches": diabolism: devil worship.
