RELIGIOUS STUDIES 200 MIRCEA ELIADE continued eliade and durkheim would not disagree on what is profane they do disagree on what is sacred. for eliade it really is a hierophany of a real sacred that really exists. for durkheim, the sacred is the spirit of the social. very general: everywhere there is the sacred. it is revealed in numerous ways. no human is born without the desire to encounter the sacred, and all can do it. that is what makes me sacred. this is our nature. this is what makes us homo religiosus. moderns have lost something, we have blurred our nature.. ARCHAIC MAN , rural groups, living in nature, THEY GET IT. we don't. In his book The Sacred & Profane, he lists numerous examples of how the sacred shows up. his examples are extremely broad, from polynesia to viking to christianity across time and say there you have it, a rule of the sacred. but he ignores the conter- examples. AXIS MUNDI villages are never found in just any place... they are founded in the center of the world. villages are not founded because of logical situation near water or something, but because the sacred has erupted in this place, erupte
