Document Summary

Boreal songbird responses to partial retention harvest. A lot of di erent groups of species started declining. The number one cause of mortality for songbirds is cats. The boreal forest is the breeding ground for billions of birds from over 300 species. Species associated with those trees have been declining pretty severly, because the forests have been managed as a sort of agri-forestry (in europe) Very e cient, but not great for biodiversity. Alternatives that might do a better job at preserving biodiversity w/in the boreal forest. Big idea: imitate natural disturbances that are within the boreal forest. The old way ignores the fact that re is very variable. Instead of coming back as a single even-aged stand, it comes back as an uneven-aged stand and holds more diversity. Leaving some trees: create little habitat islands for these species. This is where she"s done all of her research.
