Roosevelt- involved in designation of yellowstone, his first designation under the national wildlife. Protected areas from development but still allowed hunting, similar to current day norway (finland) where they have a right to walk on all land including farmland when it is frozen and to hunt within seasonal and species restrictions. John muir (romantic transcendentalism) worked with roosevelt, called what he did preservationism, We place emphasis on utilitarian values, we don"t necessarily evaluate any values not related to us, ie if we had technological alternatives to nature services, our value of the nature services would dramatically decrease. Grey owl- british but pretended to be part scottish, part apache, hid that he was british, as did his publisher, to promote a certain image of himself and sell his books. Promoted conservation, first beavers and then more broadly, was extremely popular. Bunny harkin hired him as a national park spokesman, gave him a house in prince albert park for free.
