Document Summary
Not all organizations are run or function based on formal rationality. Example of rationality: us vs japanese car manufacturing. Us: specialization, cog in the wheel , division of labour, taylorism. Japan: teamwork, workers had knowledge to contribute, less hierarchal, improvement through team building, Bureaucracy is any organization that is based on formal rationality. Weber"s critic of formal rationality (disenchantment), if everything becomes about maximize efficiency we could lose our values, lose the idea that there are other ways, it"s dangerous to only focus on getting as much as you can out. People are often forced to play roles that often conflict with their personal beliefs (customer service: always have to be happy and polite) Had to shock people if they got an answer wrong, didn"t want to, but under authority they followed orders. People were prepared to shock people with enough volts to kill. (shocks were fake) Because someone is an expert they have authority, and have legitimate authority.
