Deviance involves violating a norm; crime involves breaking a law. Sociology of law critical analysis of legislation(laws) regarding crime, and how it is created. Policing role of law enforcement agencies in bringing offenders to justice. Court system how courts interpret and enforce the law determination of sanctions. Corrections delivery of sanctions, primarily through the prison system. Crime rates based on information recorded by police departments. Uniform crime reporting (ucr) survey: collects data from over 1200. Canadian police departments on 91 categories of crime. A lot of crime is not reported: victimless crimes(drug use, illegal gambling, sexual abuse, common assaults by friends or relatives, financial crimes. Some crimes reported aren"t recorded by police: some sexual assaults, some hate crimes. The crime funnel a lot of crime but a large amount gets funneled out. Self- report surveys: reveal similar(to ucr) rates of serious crimes, but up to three times higher rates for less serious crimes.
