SOC212 Lecture : Durkheim and Suicide; Marx
Document Summary
Durkheim argued that any social fact can be normal or pathological. Normal: something that has always existed in society, can bring people together, serves a function (to some extent) Pathological: when something becomes too common, creates dysfunction, breaks up communities. In every society there are forces that pressures individuals towards suicide (external constraints) Groups in society that people join to feel belonging. When there is too much integration it can result in altruistic suicide. Too much emphasis on individual, lack of sense of balance, can result in egoistic suicide. Society must provide a sense of direction and limits in life. [when people believe in fate and that all things are pre-determined it can result in fatalistic suicide] When we lose sense of limits and direction (state of anomie) it can result in anomic suicide. *this chart could be considered to be an add on to the chart we made on january 19th.
