In class: deviance is accompanied with a role, role is a set that expectations that are associated with a particular status, our role tells us what to do. Times*********: status is the part for which we are cast and the role is how we play the part. The individual"s sense of identity is altered to be that of the deviant: this doesn"t mean that they cannot embrace another variety of different roles. Ie: mafia leader: is a criminal, runs an organized crime family, clearly embraces deviant role; but he may also see himself as a good husband, father, business person: role merger: individual becomes the role. This is a kind of career deviant: think of a continuum or spectrum, when the individual becomes the role, career deviant, when an individual internalizes a deviant mentally, goes from novice to full status deviant. Ie: nudist sleeping: (nude in the privacy of your own home).
