Strong local institutions like family, churches, community centers, schools, can offset the criminality of poverty. Accumulation of wealth/power/material success, starts to weigh heavily in value system of society, things start to impact the social fabric that we have with local institutions. Workday crept into home life- always on the clock (with emails and phones). Financial issues are leading cause of divorce among married couples, and family building is delayed/devalued now a days as proper career/ educational investments, to secure financial future, becomes prioritized. Jobs count more than family/ home: business and finance are esteemed roles in society. (caregiving roles are devalued/diminished in our views of them and economically- they don"t pay well. High crime rates are explained at this cultural level, because desire for material goods cannot always be achieved by legitimate means. Extra legal means/ criminal means become strategies for obtaining wealth. Dominance of economic concerns that weakens our informal social control- frie(cid:374)ds, fa(cid:373)ilies, s(cid:272)hools (cid:895)
