What is a theory? (-set of ideas that can be tested as a hypothesis for a natural phenomenon) The social production of theories involves: authorized knowers, criminological knowledge(s, forms of control and/or punishment, societal patterns and changes. *authorized to know; certified and trained to be able to be authorized as a knower . Based on notions such as liberalism and utilitarianism from the enlightenment. The punishment should fit the crime (beccaria, 1819) This approach created 3 waves of influence on juvenile justice in canada: philanthropic elite, eugenics-informed psychiatry, environmental psychology. Usually volunteers from the male political and business elite. Believed in social progress, the possibility of perfecting persons as products of the environment. The right social conditions: role models, housing, education, religious teachings, etc. will transform criminals to useful beings. Eugenics = combined darwin"s ideas with inherited intelligence , etc. Those deemed mentally defective were sterilized to prevent them passing on their defective genes.
