Components of the justice system: police (investigate crime, courts ( determine guilty or innocent, corrections ( administer punishment, community. Important but overlooked component, play direct and indirect role; Look at restorative justice, restorative justice requires community participation and input in order to be successful. Community has to compensate for deficiencies in the system, The problem the system doesn"t provide the community with proper resources, More responsibility on community but not enough resources so neither thing is as effective as it could"ve been. Purposes of the justice system: control of crime. Respond to crime that already have been committed: prevention of crime. Better to prevent the crime than deal with it after the fact. Eg of crime prevention programs informal one is neighborhood watch; divert outside of the formal system = person that hasn"t been labeled is less likely to stay involved with crime ( theory says); In terms of crime, holding people accountable; make people face consequences of their actions.
