SOCIOLOGY 345 CULTURAL STUDIES Emerged after the Second World War. An intellectual movements. new set of strategies for critiquing contemporary societies. elucidates the major transformations after the Second World War. Emerges in Great Britain. Connected to their decline as a great power after wwii. Connected to the change in capitalism after wwii. The utmost importance of consumption in the economy and social life more generally. Described by GUY DEBORD as the emergence of the Society of the Spectacle. Connected to changes in mass communication methods. - rapid spread of TV people had a sense, after wwii, that the 19c was finally over and it was a new world in some sense second context for the emergence of cultural studies: new social movements: • women's rights • environmental movement • civil rights movement • lgbt movement • peace movement • etc. Cultural Studies saw itself as responding to these movements.
