SOC363 Lecture Notes - Lecture 3: List Of Charmed Characters, Masculinity, Media Culture
Document Summary
Tough guise: violence, media and the crisis in masculinity. Being tough, independent, powerful-there is an idea of staying inside the box. Media culture plays a crucial role, especially for men of colour (latinos, blacks). The media constructs masculinity as a cultural norm, one of the major consequences is the increasing connection of being a man and being violent. 85% of them commit murder, 90% commit assault, 95% domestic violence etc. The major victims of men"s violence are other men (people who take on more violent roles do so because of their emotional needs-this plays a part, it is a survival mechanism. This affects their psychological being as well, they need to be taught on an institutional role and an emotional role. Girls and women should also play a role by valuing men that reject the notion of violence. Many men are searching for new respectable ways of becoming better men.
