Document Summary
Statistics 151: lecture 3 gathering data (chapters 9 and 10) Census = a special sample that includes the entire population. Difficult to complete: cost, undercount, time, complexity. Convenience sample = a sample that consists of individuals who are conveniently available. Cluster sampling = a sampling design in which entire groups or clusters are chosen at random. If each cluster fairly represents the full population, cluster sampling will give us an unbiased sample: note that this is not the same as stratified sampling, and the two terms can be easily confused between one another. Simple random sample = a sample in which each individual / element of the population has an equal chance of being selected. Systematic sample = a sample drawn by selecting individuals systematically from a sampling frame: can provide a representative sample. Voluntary response sample = a sample in which individuals can choose whether to participate.
