Document Summary

Our staring hypothesis is called the null hypothesis - null because it assumes that nothing has changed. We usually write down the null hypothesis in the form h0: parameter = hypothesized value. The alternaive hypothesis, which we denote by ha, contains the value of the parameter that we consider plausible if we reject the null hypothesis. The null hypothesis, speciies a populaion parameter a value. For example, h0: p = 0. 20, and ha: p < 0. 20 as in the chapter example. We want to compare our data to what we would expect given that h0 is true. We can do this by inding out how many standard deviaions away from the proposed value we are. We then ask how likely it is to get results like we did if the null hypothesis were true. Think about the logic of jury trials: o.
