ANTH 201 Lecture Notes - Lecture 10: Golden Lion Tamarin, Old World Monkey, Simian
Document Summary
Anthropoids are less similar to the ancestral mammal (and to living mammals) than are prosimians. Because they are arboreal, have been much less studied than the large terrestrial old. General characteristics of nwm (also called neotropical monkeys\ primates) All descended from oligocene anthropoid have been separate from the old world monkeys for at least 35 million years. There are several differences between old world monkey (owm) and the nwm. Nwm live exclusively in trees, but some descend to ground to play (ie: white fronted capuchin) or to look for food (squirrel monkey). Competition for food has influenced the evolution of this family; hence each species has a diet that matches its anatomy, specifically the gut and teeth. Just over 100 species with a great range of different diets. Much is yet to be learned of nwm monkeys, as some are known only through museum specimens. Only a few studied for more than five years.
