= distinctive ways of thinking, feeling perceiving and behaving of an individual. = statistical notion identifying central tendencies in the personalities in a group of people. (for example, canadians are considered polite, and peace-loving, but there are exceptions to this rule. ) We all have ways of attributing personalities to groups; this is acquired over time, and shapes your way of seeing the world. This is in contrast to the outsider"s perspective (etic). Our goal as anthropologists is to gain the emic perspective, to acquire the understandings that they have. Ethnoscience = the understanding of how a certain culture sees the world, the materials within, and how each are considered. This tells us the value, characteristics and the relations between the different kinds of materials and concepts. Brahmins, for example, could be poor but have a high respect in the society.
