Document Summary
Michelangelo spent 4 years painting the ceiling of the sistine chapel. Sistine chapel takes its name from the pope who remodeled it pope. Sistine chapel serves as a space for religious devotion popes and high ranking clergy would hear mass, or go to the space to pray or meditate. It is still the space where cardinals meet to vote on the new pope. Julius ii wanted something that would reflect the importance of the space and give more of a narrative about christianity. Michelangelo came back a few years later to paint the back wall behind the high altar between 1534 and 1541 under a different patron. The ceiling has painted moldings that mimic architectural forms the sculpted figures are actually painted onto the ceiling (grassaille) - trompe l"oeil effect. Michelangelo has used these architectural elements to divide the spaces and demarcate the spaces he is representing.
