Florence: civic space and ideals (shared community/space) map of italy ~1450 no italy/italian language yet; everyone in each state speaks different dialect. Republic (ie. venice, florence, siena) mercantile based, wealthy. Venice trade networks with turkey, florence and banking industry. Sovereign (ie. milan, naples, sicily) kingdoms of milan and naples far away from one another geographically but similar/connected due to marriages. Papal states (ie. rome) 2 popes (but will focus on pope in rome) Dante - tuscan dialect; rst to publish book in a dialect. St. luke for doctors and painters (same patron) Orsanmichele (1337-1380) large scale architectural project originally built as grain market/storage centre was open; without walls established to distribute charity (gave out grain, helped others) economic centre, charity site, religious site. Tabernacle - madonna and child guilds were taxed with overseeing/commissioning the decorations/niches, as a way to advertise their wares.
