CMMB 343 Lecture 6: Extremophiles — Part 2
Document Summary
Almost all cultured members are hydrogen or sulfur- metabolizers and thermophiles. There are also hyperthermophilic bacteria, but no eukarya grow above 62 c. Really hot environments (hyperthermal vents) spew out reduced sulphur and iron, these ar the major energy sources at these vents. Phototrophs make green and red microbial mats. V shape, idea is that the water here is greater than 75 c from the source of the spring as it flows down the river, and cools off. The water cools off faster at the edges. As soon as the temperature of the water drops below 73 c, see immediate growth of cyanobacteria. Water on edge is cooled off, in the middle the water is hot, therefore only see microbial mats where water is cooler (edges) Archaea to 122 c or higher-possibly to 150 c. H2, h2s, and so are usually the primary sources. Deserts (surface is 50 to 55 degrees celsius)
