Document Summary

Branching morphogenesis as a recurring theme in development. Salivary glands, the pancreas and mammary glands use a similar mechanism of branching from a single vessel to create a complex branched structure with a large surface area. Fgf10 is a ligand, whose receptor is fgfr2b in the lung development. Initially have a respiratory tube that starts to bud. Within 3 days, get lots of branching of endoderm. Very severe left to right symmetry in mice. The endoderm is very important in inducing formation of tissues int he overlying mesoderm (such as the heart) the endoderm also forms two critical tubes within the body. The digestive tube which also is the origin of the liver, gallbladder, and pancreas. And also the pharynx which is anterior to where the digestive and respiratory tubes split. The early development of the endoderm into organs is a process of diverticula emerging from the single gut tube. Diverticulum-a sac or pouch branching from a main tube.
