COMS 201 Lecture Notes - Lecture 1: George Herbert Mead, Claude Shannon, Warren Weaver
Document Summary
In 1940s, claude shannon and warren weaver developed the earliest models of the communication process. They described communication as the flow of information from one person"s mind (a source) to the mind of another person (a destination). The source person creates a message and transmits it by voice or with the aid of a telephone or other transmitting equipment. The message is then received by an ear or a piece of receiving equipment, and then interpreted by the destination person. This model misinterprets communication as a linear sequence from source to receiver. The model also labels communicator as either sender or receiver, when the communicator can be both. Communication can be nonverbal actions like smiling or nodding are forms of communication. It is necessary to study communications formally because the better we understand something, the more effective we can be.
