Coms 369 lecture 2: rhetoric and why it matters. Rhetoric is not about attack and defend: it is about: listening carefully, critically analyzing all sides of an issue, weighing the available evidence, figuring out what we believe, expressing our ideas clearly. When we are making up our minds about what to think or do, we ought to hear whatever can be said on an issue from every possible perspective. The result is that we will have a knowledgeable opinion or we can make an informed decision. By studying rhetoric, we can do the following: improve our ability to read and think critically and write or speak about significant problems and issues that have social consequences, write better papers, get better grades. Workplace: you will be able to evaluate decisions and ideas. You can get your point across in department meetings. Personal: you will be able to make moral and ethical decisions that you have thought through.
