Popular music from the study of philosophy and social sciences. Hates jazz in his works, but apparently played it; exposed himself to it. Capitalist culture is oppressive; he is fighting oppression, not in terms of taste but in terms of what is oppressing the population. After fleeing germany, adorno landed in la in the 1940"s so he is immersed in it. Later works exclaim that he sees similar rise as in nazi germany. The origin of levis and that society, is that he was apart of an era that was dying so he lost his influence. Adorno was seeing the rise of popular culture similar to the country he had to flee. Variation is reduced to the detail and subjected to the overarching standardized whole. The variation is isolated and has no impact on the whole. The listener automatically imposes a framework to any variation. Popular music should be simultaneously new and familiar or natural to the listener.
