The non-aligned world or world of poor countries --poverty being fundamental identity. Large majority if not all have been colonized . 4th world (george manuel) used in 2 distinct ways: Developed and developing , rich & poor worlds. High, mediums and low income countries-- (wb/imf) The crude dichotomy btn developed and developing ; and 1st , 2nd & 3rd worlds now replaced by the undp human dev"t index. Some of these labels imply hierarchy of nations. Some of the traditional labels tell us nothing about: quality of life and distribution of wealth or progress. The language and labels highlights some of the core ideas, beliefs, values, models etc. that inform dev"t practice and policy since 1945.
