Tolkien is animating the natural world with a life force. Think of tolkien living in the times of the world wars and the industrial revolution. By animating the wild and natural environments tolkien attempts to form a space where the revolution is reversed. Hippies liked this book because it seemed to promote the relationship between humans and the natural environment. Fantasy gets us away from industrialization whereas sci-fi keeps us focused on it.
