Katherine harris bradley and edith emma cooper (the aunt and niece respectively) who collaboratively wrote under the pseudonym of michael field . Katherine harris bradley was born to the wife of a fairly wealthy tobacco merchant in 1846 in birmingham. When katherine was only 2, her father passed away. This prompted her older sister, 11 years her senior, to marry not long after. In 1862 emma has a daughter edith emma. After the birth of her second child, amy, in 1864, emma is rendered invalid. At this point katherine has to step in and play mother to the children. At 18 years old, katherine becomes the legal guardian of edith. Marion thain writes that the two became inseparable and katherine filled many roles in her niece"s life, including lover. The women enjoyed a sizeable inheritance and independent means. This allowed them to receive and extensive education, first at newnham. College in cambridge, then at college de france in paris.
