Looking at the girl who is waiting for her lover. Lots of detail over how dirty she has become. Mary: he is hooded as a very physical person. A way of reading the sexuality always seems to be waiting for vincent in their relationship that can"t be immediately expressed. How everything is sort of just thrown together. Mary seems to idolize the city whereas vincent sees it in a more realistic way. Living in a city would wear you down enough that your weariness would pass on to your children, as well as any diseases the parents have: people thought that this was how alcoholism was passed on. You get a really close third person narration. There is a pull back from narrating in this part. The separation between the narrator and mary: this woman who is idealizing vincent"s absence. The lover goes away on this dangerous journey but comes back to sweep the heroine off her feet.
