Determines how accomplished a work is and what place it should hold in evolving the story. Comprises all writing that seeks to explain, analyze, clarify, question meaning and significance of literature. Dense and difficult; explanations are necessarily incomplete and selective. Only need to be weary of its existence. Helps understand and make writing more informed and articulate. Implies attitude or stance toward subject and reader. "tone of voice" project a variety of "expressions" Serious, playful, exaggerated, understated, formal/informal, ironic, straightforward, or complex mix. People of literature work, could be defined by animals or other beings. Characterization: narrator"s description of what characters look like, think, say and do; own characters look like, think, say and do; own actions/views of themselves/others/behaviors toward them. One of the six elements of drama identified by aristotle. Context for the action to take place: time, place, culture, and atmosphere in which it occurs.
