In addressing the structure of the universe, ancient philosophers irst disinguished between stars and planets. The geometric model eventually gained the most followers due to the egypian mathemaician ptolemy, because his theory promoted the idea of the earth being the most important place in the universe. During the renaissance, people began recognizing and understanding that the sun was in fact at the center of the universe. In the centuries following the isaac newton"s explanaion of gravity, scienists gradually adopted modern terminology for discussing the universe: Mater: being the substance of the universe that takes up space. The amount of mater inside of an object is called mass. Density: the amount of mass occupying a given volume of space. The mater in the universe is coninually moving. This movement is known as work also known as energy (the ability to do work)
