Our knowledge comes from a variety of sources: tragedy, comedy, orations, legal speeches, archaeology (e. g. epigraphy and pottery) All of our evidence was produced by, largely for, men. Youth: infant mortality was common in classical athens, athenians practiced infanticide, athenians girls were not formally educated. Marriage: they married young, and often to much older men. Often around the age 14, bride had little to no say over the groom: two roles: Bear children and run the household: ideology of seclusion, marriages were as much about making beneficial connections as they were about preserving the family. Often marry her own relative: dowry could have been 25% of the families" fortune, husband or wife could be legally initiate a divorce. Epikleros women who do not have any male siblings. The closest male relative of the women could create a divorce for her. After the divorce the man is force to give back the dowry and or 18% of her money.
