Later than greek polis system (750 bc: 7th c later than 8th c bc, similar to greece, but developments happen a little later, beginning to build central area in middle of town. Italy was very diverse: diff communities/groups/etc all speaking their own language: romans eventually conquer entire italian peninsula. Start out in rome itself (tiny little patch of space) "latin" people group: north of rome: etruria, etruscans (roughly modern-day tuscany, powerful, advanced people, active in land/sea trading. Se of rome: campania: magna graecia ("great greeks", arrive in italy 8th c. bc. Bronze etruscan ceremonial chariot w/ scenes from greek mythology, late 6th c. bc: greek-style shield (not traditional hoplite shield, greek mythology. Mother divine, gives magical armour: middle: head of gorgon. Evidence for early rome: archaeological/material evidence, but no proven connections to characters of early roman myth, tended to assume everything connected to their kings.
