Germany one of the first historicl ournals found in germany in 1859. The rise of science in the 19th century. History needed a methodology/clear standards during this time. Historians wanted to extinguish their personality and access it with the standards of the past and not the present. There was a lot of talk of objective history during this time. They learned not to use the past to justify the present but used it as a source of explanation. Every period and culture had their own specialities, each needed to be studied in their own term. In the late 19th and early 20th century: there is tension between a theory driven history and the inductive approach for historical writing. Early 20th century: most historians are committed to justifying their sources. What is a primary source: use a monograph. You must use primary sources for a good essay.
