Seventeenth century and the connection between war and society: the 17th century saw fundamental changes in both war and society, as a subtheme to this class, the military are a reflection of hte society they are apart. A conservative reflection, but a reflections nonetheless: the notion is that armies reflect society, the beginning of modern armies and modern warfare, lines up with the beginnings of the modern state. The second in command is a lieutenant, within that rank structure you have other rank structures like sgt and cpl.
