KNES 259 Lecture Notes - Lecture 24: Golgi Tendon Organ, Withdrawal Reflex, Autonomic Nervous System

30 views5 pages

Document Summary

Dendrites are peripheral, axons are in cns. Only autonomic system neurons are entirely outside the cns. Dendrites in cns, terminal ends are peripheral. Gray matter: unmyelinated nerve and cell bodies, dendrites, and axon terminals. 90% of cns cells ( the volume) Provide physical and metabolic support for cns. General maintenance of the space neurons occupy (metabolic support and repair functions) Secrete csf, control the nutrients in csf, forms blood brain barrier. Protective reflexes which are made quicker by not involving the brain. Proprioceptors located in muscle, joints, and ligaments carry input to cns. Alpha motor neurons are now at increased firing and carry input back to the muscle. Proprioceptors: muscle spindles and golgi tendon organs. Spindle is non-contractile with gamma fibres on either end to monitor the stretch in a muscle. Both have a tonic rate of firing which increases if they are stretched and decreases if they are contracted.
