Document Summary

The lower leg has 4 compartments: the anterior compartment (innervated by the deep peroneal nerve) Peroneus tertius: the lateral compartment (innervated by the superficial peroneal nerve) Peroneus brevis: the deep posterior compartment (innervated by the tibial nerve) Flexor hallucis longus: the posterior compartment (innervated by the tibial nerve) Most superficial and anterior muscle in lower leg. Part of anterior compartment because it"s in front of the medial/lateral axis. Works with peroneus tertius in dorsiflexion and tibialis posterior in inversion. Peroneus tertius (hint: peroneal is defined as having to do with the outer aspect of the lower leg use this to help with muscles and nerves) Begins laterally, goes behind lateral malleolus, runs across bottom of foot to the big toe. All posterior, deep posterior, and lateral compartment muscles are synergists in plantarflexion. Fascia is thin on the dorsum (back of foot) and thicker on plantar surface. Thick central portion is called the plantar aponeurosis or plantar fascia .
