Document Summary

The hypothalamus and pituitary are the central glands because the hypothalamus controls the pituitary and the pituitary controls everything else. Endocrine means ductless, as in there is no connecting duct from where the messenger is secreted and the target cells so there has to be an alternate means of getting the message where it needs to be. Transport of ions or molecules across cell membranes. Can exert effects at very low concentrations. Half life indicates the length of their activity. Tropic hormones: hormones which act on other endocrine glands to control their hormone production. Neuropeptides: secreted by neurosecretory cells which then enter the bloodstream. Includes catecholamines secreted by the adrenal medulla and all hormones secreted by the anterior & posterior pituitary. Peptide hormones: proteins which are used as hormones. First is a preprohormone: a large, inactive version of the protein. Then a prohormone after post-translational modification, then an active peptide hormone.
