Location of erythropoietin needed for rbc production. Reason that you don"t normally see symptoms of kidney failure until 75% failure. Consist of both the tubule and the blood supply. Stays mostly in the cortex: juxtamedullary. Used to create the osmotic gradient in the medulla which pulls water out of the collecting ducts. Described as a ball-like tuft of capillaries . Capillaries are fenestrated (have pores) to make them more permeable. Essentially just creates an osmotic gradient in the medulla so that water can be pulled back out of the collecting duct later. Controlled by hormones to collect what is needed and excrete what isn"t. Efferent arteriole is towards the peritubular capillaries. Peritubular capillaries are the site of gas exchange. Reabsorbs most of what was removed from the blood. Reabsorbs whatever amount of water is needed. Movement of fluid (electrolytes, water, glucose) into the tubule.
