Reflect and produce ideas about whose sports count. Ex 1 militarism and nationalism in usa: recruiting at games, using war language to describe battles, recognizing veterans on coaches corner. Can provide a space for change & resistance. Ex: gilmore junio giving up his spot in the 2014. Olympics for perry morrison, who junio felt was more qualified. When morrison won a bronze medal, junio was painted as a hero. Greatly influences what we think about and how often. Vast and varied = more access = more voices. Often serves the interests of those with power & wealth. Content is edited and re-presented for profit, to shape values, to deliver news, or increase artistic/technical reputation. Ex avatar appeal was not only in story. 1880s: sports journalists become central on canadian newspapers. 1900s to ww1: several female sports journalists, former international athletes, covering both men"s and women"s sports. Unfortunately, their voices were lost at the onset of ww2.
