KNES 259 Lecture Notes - Lecture 17: Lateral Sulcus, Central Canal, Thalamus
Document Summary
3 membranes which enclose the brain and spinal cord. Enclose vital fluid filled space (subarachnoid) vital to normal functioning of the brain. 3 layers: dura mater ( tough mother , covers all of cns, thickest, most outer layer, arachnoid mater, spider web-like, pia mater (pia = tender, tender mother , most internal, goes into every fold of the brain. Actually composed of two layers which sometimes separate and make gaps. Separation is for venous drainage via the sinuses. Large veins from brain drain into these sinuses which all join at the confluence of sinuses. When it is together it physically separates sections of the brain. Tentorium cerebelli separates occipital lobe from the cerebellum. Held against dura mater by csf pressure. Kind of like scaffolding to hold brain where it is so it doesn"t get injured every time you turn your head. In every fold and contour of the brain.
