Cells start as undifferentiated pluripotent (can turn into many things) stem cells. Only need to know epo- influences the growth of rbc. Wbc count is 5,000-10,000 / mm^3 (important for lab) ~1% is replaced per day (that"s 2 million per second!) Takes 7 days to form. (iron, folic acid and vitamin b12 important) Rbc shape is so oxygen is mainly stored on the outside of the cell, decreasing diffusion distance. Megakaryocytes are found within the bone marrow and break apart into fragments known as platelets. Ratio of packed rbc"s to total blood volume. When testing hematocrit, after spinning the blood sample, plasma is at the top, followed by rbc"s. (small percentage of wbc and platelets in between). Lymph nodes, bone marrow (cite of cell production), liver (clotting factors), spleen (lymphocytes, plasma, and antibodies) In bone marrow, need erythropoietin, folic acid, b12, and iron. Control of erythropoiesis is based on oxygen carrying in the blood.
