North/maghreb-islam, lots of arab languages, really better connected with the middle east-culturally. 1b-oral history recitation- history in trade centres that trade has gone through- Timbuktu was a trade centre- year 800-1800- large amount of profit that went through the trade centre- centre of muslim scholarships- history was preserved in poetry which was always done with some sort of musical accompaniment- 1c-spiritual or religious music-probably the most important reason why music is created- most for funerals- when someone dies, everyone in the community will take part in the funeral that includes a lot of drumming and singing. 2-multi-disciplinary- was always together with some other art form. 3-participation-like everyone participating in a funeral- everyone in the community is taking part in music and there is usually no audience and no barrier between performers and listeners but everyone is engaged- all ages and people.
