NURS 389 Lecture Notes - Lecture 5: Disengagement Theory, Activity Theory, Social Exchange Theory
Document Summary
Attempt to explain and predict changes in roles and relationships in middle and late life with an emphasis on adjustment: disengagement theory: aging is a time when older adults and society engage in mutual separation. It is now recognized that although some people do disengage, disengagement is not a normal part of aging: activity theory: remaining as active as possible contributes to successful aging. Some research points out that the meaning of the activity might be more important than the actual activity: continuity theory: continuity strategies are used to adapt to the changes of normal ageing. An older person who liked decorating as a young person, may take up an activity in the same domain: age-stratification theory: goes beyond the individual to the age structure of society. People of certain ages are organized into certain categories: social exchange theory: withdrawal or social isolation is the result of an imbalance in the life social exchanges between older persons and younger persons.
