Function: delivery of oxygen, nutrients, hormones, immune system components and other substances to body tissues and removal of the waste products of metabolism. Left side: pumps blood throughout the systemic circulation. Arteries become arterioles- and then even smaller vessels. Eventually they become capillary beds where blood is exchanged. Structural support of heart issues and circulation of pulmonary and systemic blood through the heart. The 2 layers of the pericardium (the parietal and visceral pericardia) are separated by a fluid containing space called the pericardial cavity. Myocardium: (middle)- thickest layer, composed of cardiac muscle (cardiomyocytes provide contraction force) Endocardium: (most inner)- composed of connective tissue and squamous cells. 4 rings of dense fibrous connective tissue provide a firm anchorage for the atria and ventricles. Fibrous connective structure is called the annuli fibrosis cordis. When the heart is relaxed, the 2 atrioventricular valves are open (tricuspid and mitral)
