Document Summary

People have used it historically to identify the world regions we study. After ww2, moving into 1950"s it was common to define global south as third world. The term third world was a western invention. Didn"t originate in the global south. (alfred sauvy). Was a term coined outside of our subject matter. Because it was a western invention, it concerned the biases of westerners. Did not reflect the interests, identities, biases for the people who the term was being applied. Third world: emerged in a historical context. Prior to 1945, world was dominated by a group of major powers. These powers divided the the world between them. After 1945, those empires went through process of decolonization. The imperial powers relinquish control over their empire. Happened before 1945 too but a bulk of decolonization happened after 1945. By 1954, france had to quit as indochina, became vietnam, lous , and indonia.
