Poli 399 the scientific method september 14, Empiricism is an assumption that requires that every knowledge claim we make can be verified by systematic observation. It is sensory, it relies on observation and experiences. Its assumption is that our senses (sight, touch, taste) are the most accurate way to get information about the world. Any explanation must be supported with systematic evidence. If you can"t, it is simply an assertion. You cannot make an empirical argument with simply an assertion. You do not use gut feelings or hunches . You can only make assumptions as you watch things unfold: inter-subjectivity. It is all about guarding against bias. It is not an agreement about evidence, it is an agreement about the process that we follow. There are shared standards and criteria in order to prevent/minimize bias. Transmissibility the steps that we followed in our research are spelled out in crystal clarity.
